Gloucester Cathedral prepares to welcome new Canon Precentor and Director of Congregational Development

The Revd Craig Huxley-Jones will be installed at a special service held early in the new year

Gloucester Cathedral is delighted to share that The Revd Craig Huxley-Jones will be collated and installed as Canon Precentor and Director of Congregational Development at 4pm on Saturday 13 January 2024. This is a public service which all are warmly welcome to attend, with no tickets required. The term ‘install’ comes from the point in the service when Craig is placed in his ‘stall’ in the Cathedral, which is where he will sit during regular worship such as Choral Evensong.

In his role as Canon Precentor and Director of Congregational Development, Craig will become a Residentiary Canon of the Cathedral and a full time member of the clergy. He will shape and lead the pastoral care of the congregation, visitors and Cathedral staff and volunteers, whilst strategizing for the growth of the congregation as a diverse and inclusive community. Craig will also have oversight of worship and music at the Cathedral, which is going through a particularly key period following the launch of the ambitious In Tune campaign earlier this year.

Craig moves to Gloucester from West Sussex, where he is currently Senior Chaplain at Christ’s Hospital School. Prior to this, he spent twelve years at Benenden School in Kent. He is married to Sarah and they have two young children, Persephone and Hamish.

The Revd Craig Huxley-Jones said:

“The presence of cardboard boxes throughout our house in West Sussex is a sure sign that our move to Gloucester draws near! Sarah, Persephone, Hamish and I are so excited to begin a new chapter in the Cathedral community and we are very much looking forward to getting to know everyone. I am anticipating the installation service with great joy and I can’t wait to begin a new ministry with you. I am certain that God has good things in store for us as we nurture the Cathedral’s musical and liturgical life and grow together in discipleship.”

The Very Reverend Andrew Zihni, Dean of Gloucester, added:

“I am delighted that The Revd Craig Huxley-Jones, the Cathedral’s new Canon Precentor and Director of Congregational Development, will be installed at 4pm on Saturday 13 January 2024. Canon Craig will play a key role in the musical life of the Cathedral and in leading our community deeper into worship and spirituality, so we are much looking forward to his arrival in January together with his wife, Sarah, and their two children. All are most welcome to join us at the Service of Installation; I know the Cathedral community will give Canon Craig and his family the warmest of welcomes.”
